LEARNING FROM THE YIBIR

Somali society is broken up into clan groups. Ruling clans control the government, businesses, and resources, while lower clans practice trades such as blacksmithing, leather tanning, and haircutting.  The Yibir (or Anaas) are Somalia’s lowest clan, are seen by many as sorcerers, and are considered untouchables.  Learning From the Yibir,  is a documentary project created by HASAN to give a voice and platform to the Yibir people. The film was made in partnership with the Yibir community so they could present their history, identity, and hopes for the future all in their own words.
